Although typically used for the visible range, N-BK7 does have transmission within the near infrared spectrum also. Aspheric lens surfaces are used to correct spherical aberration (where the converging light from a lens does not have a common focal point, resulting in a distorted image) in lasers and imaging. Traditional spherical lenses cannot collimate light effectively because even small angles of incidence can produce spherical aberrations. This can mean that several components may be required to get the desired result. The non-spherical surface of an aspheric lens allows a single component to effectively focus or collimate even highly divergent emissions, potentially replacing a multi-lens system with a single aspheric lens. Knight Optical offer a range of Stock N-BK7 Dome Windows, for use with Underwater Lighting. A dome is an optical window composed of two parallel curved surfaces. Domes are commonly used in defence applications and often in extreme environments such as Submersible ROV’s. The shape of the window creates a naturally strong shape that gets tougher under pressure. Using a curved dome optical surface allows for an increased beam angle, therefore allowing a greater area to be lit from one light source. For visible applications, N-BK7 with its high optical quality and uniform transmission and low absorption in the visible spectrum makes it an ideal material for underwater lighting. Knight Optical are very experienced within the Thermal Imaging market, including anti-reflective and diamond-like-carbon coatings used on the optical components in these systems. Knight Optical know exactly what you are looking for. Thermal imaging uses infrared materials such as Germanium and Silicon, however in there raw form the transmission is not the best it could be. For example, Germanium typically transmits at <45% but with an AR coating applied, it can improve transmission to >60%. This increase in transmission means that the camera sensor receives a better signal through the protective window. Also with protective windows, we can provide high quality DLC coatings. We ensure the coating is Salt Fog Tested to MIL-SPEC standard to ensure that the coating withstands harsh environments.
