Die Farbe des magnetischen Materials ist schwarz-braun. Die Vorderseite ist bei den meisten Artikeln seidenmatt weiß PVC-beschichtet und kann mit Kugelschreiber, Permanent-Marker, Paint-Marker (Lackstift) oder Boardmarker (Tafelstift) beschriftet werden. Boardmarker-Beschriftungen können in den ersten Tagen rückstandsfrei trocken abgewischt werden. Nach längerer Zeit lässt sich die Beschriftung jedoch nicht mehr vollständig entfernen. Darüber hinaus kann die Magnetfolie mit professionellen Siebdruck- oder Digitaldruckverfahren (z.B. mit UV-Härtung) bedruckt werden. Sowohl beschichtete als auch unbeschichtete Magnetfolien können per professionellem Foliendruck bedruckt werden, wobei auf eine selbstklebende PVC-Folie gedruckt wird, die noch mit einem Schutzfilm überzogen wird und dann auf die Magnetfolie aufgezogen wird. Eine Sonderstellung nimmt die die selbstklebende Magnetfolie ein, die vorderseitig statt mit einer Kunststofffolie mit einem Selbstklebefilm ausgestattet ist.
